Clinical Trial Goal


To find out if alendronate is safe and works well to treat osteonecrosis in adults with SCD

You may be able to join this trial if you:


  • Are 18-80 years old
  • Have SCD and osteonecrosis 
  • Agree to have other standard tests done to see if you can be in the clinical trial 

Trial Details


Alendronate is a drug that is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis. 

You’ll get:
  • Alendronate – A pill that you take by mouth 1 time each week

You may continue treatment for up to 6 months. The clinical trial doctors will check your health for up to 7 months.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has alendronate to treat and prevent osteoporosis. Using it in this way to treat osteonecrosis in adults with SCD is new and unproven.
