A blood or marrow transplant (BMT) can treat blood cancers and blood disorders, like leukemia and sickle cell disease. But, many patients have long-term health problems after BMT.

Good communication is important after BMT. It can help patients understand their treatment and manage their health. If there are communication gaps, patients might not get the help they need and could have health problems.

This study looked at past studies to find important areas of communication between patients and doctors.

Results

Patients need better education and support from their doctor in these areas:
  • Chronic fatigue (often feeling very tired)
  • Cognitive impairments (trouble thinking clearly)
  • Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)
  • Emotional health, like anxiety and depression
  • Sexual health
  • Taking medicines as directed
Patients often feel shy about talking about sensitive issues. They might also worry about bothering their doctors. And, doctors may not be trained to talk about things like mental health, sexual health and CAM.

Impact

  • More research is needed. Doctors need more education and training to talk with BMT patients about these topics.
  • Better communication in these areas can help patients get better faster.
